Interdisciplinary Programs

A well-rounded research center at a University often serves as a catalyst to bring change to the educational enterprise. This is especially true when the centers are interdisciplinary in nature, bringing faculty and students from different departments, colleges and schools together for a common research purpose. This opportunity enables students to draw from the expertise of different faculty members and provide a wide breadth to their training. CHTM has been involved with a variety of interdisciplinary programs.

Two current programs are:

  1. Optical Science and Engineering (OSE, optics.unm.edu), one of the oldest "interdisciplinary" programs in the country which brings together faculty and students from two departments from two different colleges.
  2. Nanoscience and Microsystems (NSMS), which brings students together from nine different departments and units.
